WOOLAVINGTON

Woolavington came into being in Saxon times. A tribe of Saxons called the Läfingas settled and had their main farmstead or tün here. The Läfa's mainly used the settlement to raise their sheep, giving us the origin of the name wull Läfingas tün, meaning the wool farm of the Läfingas. The placename whilst shortened to Levitone in the Domesday book was more fully noted as Wullavyton in 1243 and Wollavyngton around a century later. St Peters church which was declared as redundant in 1972, is now used as Seaford College chapel but is open for a few public services. Buried at the churchyard is Bishop Wilberforce and his sister who married Edward Henry Manning, a rector of the parish who eventually became Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster.
